How to Select the Right Threaded Button Bits for Top Hammer Drilling: A Technical Guide for R32, T38, and T51 Systems

In top hammer rock drilling, the threaded button bit is the ultimate point of contact with the rock formation. Operating under high-frequency stress from hydraulic drifters, selecting the correct bit configuration directly dictates your penetration rate (ROP) and total cost per meter.

When choosing bits for your R32, T38, or T51 drilling systems, selection must be based strictly on two technical criteria: mechanical design configuration and metallurgical manufacturing control.

1. Thread System & Application Matching

Top hammer drilling efficiency relies on a matched string system. Choosing the right thread profile ensures that torque and striking energy from the rock drill are transmitted linearly.

[Rock Drill/Shank] ---> [Extension/MF Rod] ---> [Threaded Button Bit]
  • R32 System (45mm - 51mm Bits): Optimized for light-duty underground development, drifting, and tunneling bolting applications. The R32 thread profile offers excellent rigidity for smaller hole diameters where high precision and straightness are required during bolting operations.

  • T38 System (64mm - 76mm Bits): The global standard for medium bench drilling and production blasting. T38 bits balance thread cross-section strength with adequate flushing space, making them the industry staple for mid-range quarries and civil engineering projects.

  • T51 System (89mm - 102mm Bits): Designed for heavy-duty surface mining and high-strength rock excavation. The massive T51 thread profile handles the massive torque and impact energy generated by high-power modern hydraulic drifters without breaking at the joint.

2. Matching Bit Face & Button Profiles to Geology

Selecting the correct face design and carbide profile is essential to prevent premature bit failure and excessive deviation.

Face Design Selection:

  • Flat Face: Best suited for hard, abrasive, and fractured rock formations. The flat structural profile offers high stability and robust support for the carbide buttons, reducing the risk of body washing.

  • Drop Center: Engineered specifically for soft-to-medium, homogeneous rock formations. The recessed center design provides excellent hole straightness tracking and maximizes flushing efficiency to clear cuttings rapidly from the hole bottom.

Button Shape Selection:

  • Spherical (Domed) Buttons: High durability profiles engineered for extremely hard, abrasive rocks. They offer maximum resistance to fracturing under intense, high-frequency impact.

  • Ballistic (Parabolic) Buttons: High-penetration profiles designed for soft-to-medium, non-abrasive rock. They slice through formations rapidly to maximize ROP, though they are susceptible to shearing in hard rock.

3. Manufacturing Integrity: The Critical Role of 100% Virgin Tungsten Carbide

While face geometry determines the initial cutting action, the metallurgical quality of the inserts determines the lifespan of the bit.

A common, cost-cutting practice among low-tier manufacturers is utilizing recycled tungsten carbide powder to form bit inserts. Recycled carbide contains micro-impurities and uneven cobalt distribution, leading to a drastic reduction in fatigue strength. Under the intense heat and continuous mechanical shock of top hammer drilling, recycled carbide buttons suffer from premature thermal cracking, button shearing, and catastrophic fracturing.

Bloom Machinery Manufacturing Control Standard:To guarantee alternative replacement compatibility with major global brands, Bloom Machinery strictly enforces a Zero Recycled Carbide policy. All premium rock drilling bits are manufactured using exclusively 100% virgin tungsten carbide buttons pressed into high-tensile alloy steel bodies.

By controlling the cobalt binder uniformity and grain sizing at the micron level, our bits achieve optimal structural toughness and wear resistance. This eliminates sudden button drop-outs and delivers uniform wear throughout the bit's service life, significantly reducing indexing intervals.
